I’m showing every one of my 58 years here but Ali Macgraw’s wardrobe in Love Story is the best part of the film. Another very old tv reference, a programme called The House of Elliot about 2 sisters in the 1920’s designing clothes - DROOL!
During that whole movie, the scenes are all set in beautiful places so the fashion serves as foreshadowing. Marge’s clothes get more modest and somber the more she learns about Ripley (Dickie).
Oh totally, there was once a French Vogue shoot based on her looks and it was always on my moodboards! I love that Diane Keaton always keeps her own sense of style in movies (and glasses!) - watched 'Hampstead' recently (which I wouldn't necessarily recommend - but her outfits were still fab) x
2 things. I LOVE grease 2 thanks for including the iconic Stephanie in your round up. I know the entire film word for word and agree it’s way better than grease.
Tilda is a customer of mine and she lives close by to me and she is so striking it’s unreal. A really lovely lovely woman too. X x
TV, not movies but, I loved My So Called Life SO much but never really embraced the wardrobe (rural WSussex didn't do grunge in the 90s!) UNTIL I got a pair of chunky black boots on an exchange trip to Germany in '99 due to heavy snow and I felt very Angela Chase! I still have them 🤩 Last year I bought some proper baggy jeans and even at 40-something I felt a cool combo of Angela and Lauryn Hill from Sister Act 2 🌟🫠
I was going to include Virgin Suicides, love Sofia Coppola's style in general too (also Rashida Jones in Love on the rocks - similar to Past Lives - dressed down casual) x
I pretty much have Marisa Tomei's film back catalogue on DVD, so thank you for speaking directly to my heart. Also I will add The Paper. Please watch her in this, she plays a character with total badass New York energy! It's also a beautiful nod to the beginning of the shift in newspaper readership and the importance of local papers and great reporting. Also, this sweet Q&A with her, celebrating female friendship. https://www.interviewmagazine.com/film/marisa-tomei-and-lisa-bonet-have-a-rich-and-delicious-conversation
Please do when you have the time :) I know that everyone’s harping on about nostalgia at the moment, but I promise you it’s so good and it will not disappoint. Glenn Close, Michael Keaton and Marisa Tomei. Plus a real 1990s-style local newsroom interiors aesthetic.
Loved this post! Whenever the weather gets warmer I always think of Baby from Dirty Dancing and lean towards her style. I think it must left such a mark on me at such an early age that I can’t help but gravitate towards that easy summer look
Oh I love her looks! The best film (have you ever seen ‘The Movies That Made Us’ on Netflix? A brilliant behind the scenes show on how the film got made etc)
Just last week I recommended Only You to a much younger colleague at work. She loved it too and looking at the images I still think the clothes are amazing.
I love Only You and Marisa’s wardrobe, same for A Bigger Splash and Tilda’s. I feel that Emily Mortimer’s clothes in Mary Poppins Returns was very underrated. Tweed jackets and waistcoats, battered old leather satchels, berets; so good!

Oh I love Ali Macgraw !! Not sure I can watch it again though, it's so sad! And I definitely remember House of Eliiott - iconic
I would love to dress like Tilda Swinton in A Bigger Splash everyday in the summer—this is perfect!
I know it’s cliche but GP and Jude Law in The Talented Mr. Ripley will forever be a summer style classic.
heck yes! They even help the story.

Great post and thanks for all the links. I know it sounds overdone now but Diane Keeton in Annie Hall was a huge influence for me.

How could I forget?! I dyed my hair red aged 13 because of Angela Chase
Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail, all of the sisters in Virgin Suicides, Penny Lane in Almost Famous (can you sense a theme...?)
I was going to include Virgin Suicides, love Sofia Coppola's style in general too (also Rashida Jones in Love on the rocks - similar to Past Lives - dressed down casual) x
I loved Only You! And Marisa Tomei’s hair. A wardrobe I was obsessed with was Meg Ryan’s in You’ve got Mail.
Love this!

Oh I need to see The Paper!

Past lives is brilliant and I’m so thrilled you specified it being because of Nora’s INCRED style!
I adore Emma Stone’s wardrobe in Cruella - is that weird?!
Not weird at all - she's fabulous!

Watching it recently it has aged really well!
I love that you have included Grease 2. Stephanie is an icon and it’s so much better than Grease.
