After a less than straightforward start to our holiday - cancelled flight at check-in, the offering of a flight 3 days later (whilst staying in a Gatwick hotel which didn’t really tolerate kids), the delight of catching a flight via Heathrow the following day via Barcelona, then arriving sans luggage at 1am - we had a surprisingly chilled holiday. Of course, I don’t mean relaxing by any means but, compared to the last few years of being in fight or flight mode, this was the first time we could stay out later, our day didn’t revolve around naps and both kids would go in the sea instead of one just playing with the locks in the nearby public toilets in 35 degree heat.
However, if a flight cancellation ever happens to you, I’d urge you to claim from your airline (this blog is helpful). Did you know you can claim for flight delays too? I’d always just thought a food voucher was enough. We have just been transferred £350 per person plus expenses on top (our taxi to Heathrow to catch the new flight, all food bought whilst not being at our destination). As always, there are limitations and small print but it has made the whole experience far more bearable, and now we have money to book next year’s holiday! Still waiting for a reply about our luggage compensation though…
When it did arrive 3 days late, you bet I made the most of it!
