Marisa Tomei in 'Only You' will forever be my summer style icon
And how I think her character, Faith, would dress today
I am a 90s movie nostalgia obsessive. 80s too, of course, but for style you just can’t beat Mona May’s costumes in ‘Clueless’ (I only recently found out that Mona was also the costume designer on ‘Romy & Michelle’s High School Reunion’ and this makes so much sense) or Milena Canonero’s costumes in my ultimate favourite feel-good movie: ‘Only You’.
If you have not seen this gem of a movie, please seek it out now (I own it on DVD because I can’t trust streaming services to suit my niche tastes forever) - it has aged really well. A ouji board and fortune teller inform a teenage Faith that ‘Damon Bradley’ will be the love of her life so she goes in search of him across the breadth of Italy (with her pessimistic pal, Bonnie Hunt) and stumbles into (heydey) Robert Downey Jr and a long haired Adonis-like Billy Zane on the way. Missed opportunities, destiny, an incredible Italian backdrop (plenty of ‘Roman Holiday’ references) and a wardrobe of dreams.
Its style is of course very 90s (I have just read that MT did not want to cut her hair for this movie, straight after her Oscar win in ‘My Cousin Vinnie’ but was convinced by the wardrobe department), but wouldn’t look out of place today with Y2k fashion. I like the fact that it’s actually very minimal - a monochrome colour palette with a splash of red. I’ve also discovered that it’s quite easy to emulate with my existing wardrobe.
Marisa Tomei ‘Only You’ starter kit:
Small round or oval sunglasses
Huggy hoop earrings
Cardigan (preferably cream) or jumper thrown over the shoulders (failing that, a pashmina type scarf)
Chic tailoring, but accessorised with a waistcoat or scarf
Cropped trousers so you can see your shoes (espadrilles, preferably)
Slinky dress and espadrilles

I know what’s on my rewatch list this week, what’s your 90s must-watch?
(PS if you do love movie trivia of 80s and 90s movies, I’d recommend ‘The Movies That Made Us’ on Netflix - filled with tidbits and trivia from iconic movies ‘Dirty Dancing’, ‘Home Alone’ (I love that John Candy basically ad libbed his entire character) and ‘Coming To America’.
I don’t quite know how this film has escaped my viewing but I’ll be sure to rectify! We refuse to get rid of DVDs* here; got ourselves some of those big binders with inserts to minimise storage. (*also applies to CDs, Vinyl & even a stash of cassettes). Cannot part with physical books either- my Kindle is covered in dust!
I just rewatched Only You a few days ago because you were posting about it on Instagram recently. Loved it!
